Colonial Slavery in Brazil

There are many photographs which depict the oppression in which Afro-Brazilians experienced before the abolition of slavery in 1888. Marc Ferrez (1843-1923) born in Rio de Janiero, was one of the main photographers who portrayed the experiences of Afro-Brazilians during the time of colonial slavery.

Depictions of Enslaved Black Woman, and Wet Nurses in 19th century Brazil. 

The objectification of Black Woman's bodies is represented through the practice of Wet Nurses or Amas de Leite during slavery in Brazillian cities. Depicted in the photographs, the relationships between nurses and white babies covers the reality of Enslaved Black Woman who were also mother's.
